So young and comely is Mrs. Shen Kang-po that it is difficult to think of her as a professor with 20 years' teaching experience. This experience won her a citation from the government last week on Teacher's Day along with 94 other professors for their devotion to education.
Mrs. Shen is also distinguished for her eloquence. Her warm voice reflects kindliness, intellectual achievement, and a dedicated philosophy.
In spite of her reversed character, Mrs. Shen entered with whole-hearted enthusiasm into teaching following her graduation from the Central University where she afterwards obtained her M.A. Her Major was history with particular interest in the Hsiung Nu (the Huns of the Han Dynasty.)
Teaches History
The woman professor has been teaching Western History to the junior and senior classes at the Provincial Normal University since 1948. Before she came to Taiwan she taught the same course at the Girls' Normal University in Peping.
The slim 43-years-old professor was born of an eminent old fashioned family in Honan in North China.
The professor said her parents' philosphy of life affected her thought more deeply than that of any other man.
"Although I am now in my 40s," she stated, "I still consider myself as young as college students." In fact, Mrs. Shen gets along with her students beautifully because she considers herself a classmate of her students rather than a teacher. In class she does not call the roll. But no student is absent without asking leave.
The success of her teaching is that she helps students understand their lessons through fresh examples and mutual discussion. "Because," she observed , "college students' cmprehension is much higher than that of the middle school pupils."
Mrs. Shen said movies have no attraction for her. Nor do social parties.
Simple Life
She claims that her happiness and enjoyment lie in leading a simple and tranquil life. She passes her spare time very quietly and cheerfully in doing rhe domestic duties and advancing her knowledge in the field of her teaching order to benefit her students in class.
Mrs. Shen's married life of 17 years has been a blissful one in every sense. Busy as she always is, she never sents for her husband, now dean of the liberal atrs college of the National Taiwan Universtiy, to go on an errand. Nor does she let her child be taken care of by a maidservant.
Some of foreign universities, the professor said, have now and then extended invitations to her husband and herself to give lectures. But they did not accept those offers for the simple reason that "I don't want our child to be half Chinese and half foreign in education."
In the meantime, Mrs. Shen noted that she has no objection to higher education for women. She maintains, however, that in a successful family, the housewife plays a vital role. So, when home circumstances do not permit her to further her studies in school, she should stay at home."
